day 4: first day of school

Monday was our first day of school at the Giralda Center. We had to be in at 830am to take a test to determine our levels and what class we would be in.
This is a view of our school from across
the street. It's very nice.
I was super nervous about this test though because the last Spanish classes I had were last summer in the Dominican Republic.  Sadly, I was right to be nervous. It was super hard, had 65 questions, and we weren't given much time. I didn't even finish about twenty questions at least. Luckily I wasn't the only one with issues - everyone I spoke with said it was impossible. I wish it had an oral or listening section. BUT I know I'm still taking 4395 and 4195 despite the test. I think the test is more for the school here to measure how students improve during the program. They use the test as a starting point for each student.

But, after that was all done and graded we switched into our classes and started talking about Sevilla and its history. Classes ended around 1pm and we were able to go home for lunch. My mom here is a great cook!
She made spaghetti, tuna salad (with onions, peppers, cucumbers)
and potatoes with peas and calamari.
Living here with a host family I'll try whatever she makes because A it's usually amazing and B I don't want her to get offended. The food was all very delicious! I'm a texture person and I wasn't a huge fan of the calamari because I prefer it when it's fried. I mean what isn't delicious when fried, let's be honest.

After lunch we had siesta time, which is usually my lay in bed and work on my journal for school here or on the blog.

Around five we all met back up at the school for our first excursion.  We had a guided walking tour around a neighborhood here called Santa Cruz. It started in the flower gardens across from our school and took us past several cute shops, pretty plazas and buildings.
I really like this one! I took it when we started our
tour in the gardens by our school. The two below as well.

After the park we continued on to see several other plazas and buildings.  Man was I snapping photos.

So close together! I love walking
around here.
This next building below was on la avenida de construcción. I love its intricate design on both the front and sides. Well, all over really.

Love the tile work.
And I love the rooftop terrace on this building. Such a cute spiral staircase too.

These next ones are from our walk past the cathedral.  We are visiting it by itself another day.

And the carriages outside:

After the walking tour, one of the other girls, named Tristin, and I broke off and did some more exploring and shopping. I bought wine bottle stoppers and a spoon rest.

We walked around and ended up doing dinner on calle San Fernando. We ate at Cristina & Co. and the food was amazing. We sat and talked and shared tapas and beers till about ten then each walked home. All in all: another win. I mean 13€ each for delicious tapas and like 4 beers each? I'll take it :)

  1. Well jesssica you will have to believe me. I have been writing on your blogs but must be doing something stupid because I cannot get them to post. Anyway it seems everything is going so well. I'm so happy you have made the trip. Everything looks so clean and inviting and your house mom seems so nice - and a good cook. I agree with what talked about before you left - food, etc. The class on Monday must have been difficult but you felt better knowing they agreed. But I know it will work out. Not much exciting here -hair with Jim along with acupuncturist visits for migraines and back. How exciting! Your dad probably told you. He and G'pa are going to see Barry on Friday and suit shopping on next Friday. We may grill on Monday (memorial day). Sounds good to me. So far everything you are doing sounds terrific. I'm envious but so proud of you. By the way your hair looks so pretty and healthy. I like.

Have to go now. Took a pill and am a little off kilter. Love you lots and lots. G'ma and G'pa and Seiko. Hugs and kisses too.

    1. I just took a look at the ones you posted today. It looks like you were on a school tour. Your G'pa and I both agree your pics are well done with good framing. He did krogering earlier. Good thing because we are to have severe storms from now until 9pm. Hope we don't lose power. I had Jim change my appt today to tomorrow late after acupuncture. Another migraine today. I may have to shoot myself! I believe Jon is bringing Nicole this evening to get her car from Vaughn and will go back to Columbus. All for now. Will check later tonight to see if you added more. Love you lots, G'ma and G'pa

  3. Went back over the post explaining all the pictures which is really helpful. And you will be glad because it is impossible to remember everything. You have a good representation of buildings, flowers (which are beautuful), stores, etc. You know, it just registered with me - I don't recall1ing dogs everywhere like we saw in France and Italy. About dogs, what is the update on Dug? Muzzle still?

back to Spain. Approximately how many students are in your group. How are the non-speaking spanish managing? What about the weather? It is nice here today and supposed to be for Memorial Day too. Your tour guide has everything planned and will be covering the entire city plus give people time to shop. I am jumping all over and changing subjects but as soon as I think of a question I ask it so I remember to. Maybe I should do a rough draft first!

well the unscreened deck is finally finished and looks good. The next project is really major$$$$$. We are siding the barn. Right now we're waiting for two more bids. OMG I was prepared for what I thought would be the cost, but I have had a few surprises, but it has to be done sooooooo. just enjoyed our voxing and will close here. Lots of love, G'ma and G'pa.

  4. Dug is doing well. A lot better in luann's new apartment. The new environment was a good change for him. We sent her the same training collar we ordered for Kaela to help her. I'm pretty sure he's still being muzzled.

In our group there are about 40 students. As far as non spanish speaking students everyone seems to be doing okay, at least that I know of. The weather here has been very nice. Warm but not too hot and the winds always feel great. It's only rained one day and it was even much rain.

I'm happy the deck is done, that's a relief. As far as numbers for having the barn resided I can only imagine! Do you have to do all of the sides?

we'll vox soon, love you both!
